Main Activities
Anti-Corruption Rallies
This is one of the methods mostly used to disseminate information to the public because many people are reached at once. The rallies are mostly held in trading centres and markets. They are usually interactive and provide instant feedback from participants who are given an opportunity to ask questions. Rallies often help the general public to understand the concept of corruption, how to report corruption to ACB and how the law protects them as whistleblowers.
Anti-Corruption Workshops
The anti-corruption workshops aim at equipping participants with information about ACB and effects of corruption and how it can be reported to ACB. Often trainees/participants are also trained to train others on the issues of corruption. The workshops target a particular grouping like Chiefs, religious leaders’ e.t.c.
Electronic Media Programmes – Radio
Realising that many people in Malawi listens to the radio; the ACB is also using this media as one way of disseminating the information to the general public. Radio reaches all corners of Malawi and it has proved to be an effective way of disseminating information especially those at the grassroots in remote areas. Radio jingles, drama, phone-in programmes are used to inform listeners on issues of corruption.
Print Media Programmes
The ACB runs a series of newspaper cartoons. It is believed that cartoons can send a message even to the illiterate. It is therefore an effective way of disseminating messages. The challenge is that not many people in Malawi buy and read newspapers.
Trade Fair
Every year, the Bureau participates in international trade fairs. This is an opportunity to reach out and remind business people to conduct their businesses free from corruption. The fair gives an opportunity for the ACB to discuss with the business community on the issues of corruption. It is also an opportune time to get public perception about the operations of the ACB.
ACB Communication Strategy
This was developed by Public Education Section in 2007 with the help of a consultant from Cassals and Associates. It aims at establishing a systematic way of communicating our messages to the public. It has target audiences and methodologies to be used. It has a tool for continuous monitoring and evaluating at the end of every 3 years. It is designed to be dynamic. The strategy also outlines tasks that the Corruption Prevention section and the PRO should do.
IEC Materials
These are not sold. They are given out freely at meetings, rallies and workshops. Some are mailed to people on request. For a list of available IEC’s, please click here.
