COURT FINDS POLICE OFFICER GUILTY FOR CORRUPTION

On 3rd April, 2006, the Anti-Corruption Bureau received a complaint alleging that Samuel Nkhata, a Police Officer at Sinyala Police Unit now based at Mponela Police Station solicited and received K3,000.00 and K2,000.00 from Legion Ntaba and Kingsley Kanyenda respectively in order for Nkhata to release Mcmillan Lebiamu on Police bail.

 The Anti-Corruption Bureau instituted investigations into the matter which confirmed the allegation.

 On 29th November, 2007, the Anti-Corruption Bureau took Samuel Nkhata to Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court where he was charged with one count of misuse of public office contrary to Section 25 B (1) of the Corrupt Practices Act. He was also charged with two counts of soliciting an advantage and another two counts of receiving an advantage contrary to Section 24 (1) of the Corrupt Practices Act.

 On 27th July, 2011, Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court found Samuel Nkhata guilty on all the four counts.

 On 29th July, 2011, Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court sentenced Samuel Allan Nkhata to twenty four (24) months imprisonment with hard labour on each of the four counts. The sentences will run concurrently from 27th July, 2011, when he was convicted and remanded to Maula prison.
