COURT CONVICTS IMPERSONATOR
On 25th February, 2010, the Anti-Corruption Bureau received a complaint alleging that a certain person who is calling himself Mr. Banda/ Mhango is impersonating public officers and Bureau officers in order to swindle money from members of the public. The complaint further alleged that the man had already swindled K45, 000.00 and was demanding K200, 000.00 from a certain contractor.
The Bureau instituted investigations into the matter which confirmed that Wilford Mhandu Mvula was impersonating public and Bureau officers in order to swindle money from members of the public.
He was arrested and taken to Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court where he was charged with one count of impersonating public officers contrary to Section 99 of the Penal Code and one count of obtaining money by false pretences contrary to Section 315 of the Penal Code.
On 12th July, 2010, Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court found Wilford Mhandu Mvula with a case to answer on all the two counts.
On 4th October, 2010 Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court found Mhandu Mvula guilty of impersonating a public officer contrary to Section 99 of the penal Code. He was acquitted on the charge of obtaining money by false pretences because he indicated that he would repay the money. He was sentenced to 9 months imprisonment but suspended to 30 months.

ACB ARRESTS LOGISTICS MANAGER FOR MARY’S MEALS AND PUBLIC WORKS FOREMAN
ARREST OF FLORIAN MICHAEL SUWEDI
On 26th February, 2010, the Anti-Corruption Bureau received a complaint alleging that Florian Michael Suwedi solicited K10, 000.00 from a driver of Blantyre Archdiocease in order for Suwedi to consider the driver for more field trips.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau instituted investigations into the matter which confirmed the allegation.
On 22nd September, 2010 the Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested Frolian Michael Suwedi. He was taken to Blantyre Magistrate’s Court where he was charged with one count of Corrupt Practices by a private person contrary to Section 26(1) of the Corrupt Practices Act.
He was released on bail after fulfilling the following conditions:
- Deposited with the court K5,000.00 cash as surety
- Produced one surety of K50,000.00 not cash
- Surrendered travel documents to the court
- Ordered to report at Anti-Corruption Bureau offices once every fortnight
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge. The case goes to court on 14th October, 2010 for trial.
ARREST AND CONVICTION OF WALTER JAMES
On 10th March, 2010, the Anti-Corruption Bureau received a complaint alleging that officials responsible for the Malawi Government public works programme in Dedza were recruiting less number of people and pocketing the money for the remaining number of people.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau instituted investigations into the matter which confirmed that Walter James, a foreman recruited 31 people instead of 60 and pocketed the sum of K69, 600.
On 21st September, 2010 the Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested Walter James. He was taken to Dedza Magistrate’s Court where he was charged with one count of obtaining money by false pretences contrary to Section 319 of the Penal Code, falsification of a register contrary to Section 326 and one count of abuse of office contrary to Section 95 of the Penal Code.
He pleaded guilty to all the charges. He was convicted and ordered to pay back the money before 7th October, 2010. The case goes to court on 7th October for sentencing. He has since paid K16, 000.00 and is expected to pay the remaining sum before the 7th of October, 2010
