ANTI- CORRUPTION BUREAU ARRESTS ADMARC OFFICIAL AND SECURITY OFFICER IN NTCHISI

In January, 2010, the Anti-Corruption Bureau received a complaint alleging that Mr. Salatiele Mitambo (in-charge) and Mathews Phiri (security officer) at Swaswa ADMARC in Ntchisi were selling subsidized fertilizer at K8 00.00 per K50 kilogram bag.

The Anti-Corruption Bureau instituted investigations into the matter which found out that the two were selling the subsidized fertilizer to vendors and other people not targeted for the programme at the cost of K4, 5000.00 per bag.

On 2nd September, 2010, the Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested Salatiele Mitambo and Mathews Phiri.  On 3rd September, 2010, the two were taken to Ntchisi Magistrate’s Court where Mitambo was charged with two counts of corrupt practices by public officer contrary to Section 24 (1) and Section 25A (1) of the Corrupt Practices Act . Phiri was charged with one count of aiding and abetting a corrupt practice contrary to Section 35 as read with Section 24 (1) and Section 25A (1) of the Corrupt Practices Act.

They were released on bail after depositing K5, 000.00 cash each with the court. They produced two sureties of K10, 000.00 not cash. They were further ordered to be reporting to the nearest Police station once every fortnight on Fridays. They were also ordered to surrender their travel documents to the court.

They appear in court on 30th September and 1st October, 2010 for trial.

The Bureau would like to advise all those responsible for the administration of fertilizer subsidy to desist from corrupt practices for the benefit of all deserving citizens of Malawi. The Bureau will continue to bring to book all persons involved in corrupt practices during this year’s subsidy program. We call upon all Malawians not to hesitate to report those who behave corruptly in the administration of this year’s subsidy program to the Anti-Corruption Bureau or the Malawi Police.

 ANTI- CORRUPTION BUREAU ARRESTS OWEN CHAMPITIRA

 On 26th January, 2009, the Anti-Corruption Bureau received a complaint alleging that Mr. Owen Champitira a teacher at Chipasula Secondary school solicited K20, 000.00 from a parent in order for the parent to have his son admitted at Chipasula secondary School and register as an internal candidate for the 2009 Malawi School Certificate Examinations.

 The Anti-Corruption Bureau instituted investigations into the matter which confirmed the allegation.

 On 26th August, 2010, the Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested Owen Champitira.  He was charged with one count of corrupt practices by public officer contrary to Section 24 (1) of the Corrupt Practices Act

 He was released on bail after depositing K5, 000.00 cash with the court. He produced two sureties of K10, 000.00 not cash. He was also ordered to be reporting to Anti-Corruption Bureau once every month on the last Friday.

 He appears in court on 14th October, 2010 for trial.
