COURT  CONVICTS  POLICE  OFFICER –  LILONGWE POLICE UNIT

On 20^th July, 2007, the Anti-Corruption Bureau received a complaint alleging that Owen Tebulo a Police Officer at Lilongwe Police Station solicited K5,000.00 and received K1,055 from Allan Makondetsa in order for Tebulo to release Makondetsa without putting him in police custody after an arrest.

The Anti-Corruption Bureau instituted investigations into the allegations which confirmed the allegation.

On 23^rd March, 2009 the Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested Owen Tebulo. He was taken to Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court on 24^th March, 2009 where he was granted bail after he deposited K5, 000.00 with the court and produced two sureties of K10, 000.00 each not cash.

Owen Tebulo was taken to court to answer one charge of corrupt practices by public officer contrary to Section 24 (1) of the Corrupt Practices Act, one charge of abuse of office contrary to Section 25 B (1) of the Corrupt Practices Act and one charge of unlawful wounding contrary to 241 (a) of the Penal Code.

On 28^th June, 2010 Owen Tebulo was convicted on one count of Corrupt Practices by Public Officer contrary to Section 24(1) of the Corrupt Practices Act. He was acquitted on the other charges.

On 7^th July, 2010 Owen Tebulo was sentenced to 20 months imprisonment with hard labour.
