ANTI- CORRUPTION BUREAU ARRESTS GROUP VILLAGE HEADMAN CHIKUSE

In 2007, the Anti-Corruption Bureau received a complaint alleging that Mr. Thomson Ntondeza who is Group Village Headman Chikuse received K7, 500.00 from Mr. Clement Zimba in order for the Chief to favour Zimba in a land dispute.

 The Anti-Corruption Bureau instituted investigations which confirmed the allegation.

 On 6th May, 2010, the Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested Group Village headman Chikuse and brought him before Chikhwawa Magistrate’s Court. He was charged with one count of corrupt practices by a public officer contrary Section 24 (1) of the Corrupt Practices Act and one count of abuse of public office contrary to Section 25B(1) of the Corrupt Practices Act.  He pleaded not guilty to both charges.

He was released on bail after depositing K5, 000.00 with the court. He was also ordered to produce one surety of K5, 000.00 not cash. He will be reporting to Livinzu Police Unit once every week on Fridays.

 The case goes to court on 9th June, 2010 for continuation of hearing.

COURT FINDS QUEEN ELIZABETH HOSPITAL STAFF WITH A CASE TO ANSWER

On 14th January, 2010, the Anti-Corruption Bureau received a complaint alleging that Mr. Blessings Kayuni and Mr. Lumbson M. Paulosi Hospital Attendant and Acting Ward Clerk respectively demanded K1, 000.00 and K1, 500.00 respectively from Mr. Rabson Chipolopolo in order for them to include him on a list of patients to be operated on by a doctor.

 On 18th January, 2010, the Anti-Corruption Bureau on a surveillance operation arrested Mr. Blessings Kayuni and Mr. Lumbson M. Paulosi after they had received K1000.00 from Mr. Chipolopolo.

 Blessings Kayuni and Lumbson Paulosi were taken to Blantyre Magistrate’s Court where they were each charged with two counts of corrupt practices by a public officer contrary Section 24 (1) of the Corrupt Practices Act.

On 26th April, 2010, Blantyre Magistrate’s Court found Blessings Kayuni with a case to answer on both counts. The court acquitted Lumbson Paulosi for lack of sufficient evidence connecting him to the offence.

 Blessings Kayuni opted to remain silent and not to call any witness in his defence. He will appear in court on 17th May, 2010 for judgment.
